Victoria Advocate Photograph Morgue

Collection Summary

The collection includes an undetermined number of black and white 4"x5" negatives occupying about 32 file drawers. The negatives date from 1950 to 1986. Only photographs taken by Advocate staff photographers are included in the morgue, there are no contributed photographs in the collection. There may be many negatives of a single event in the morgue, while only 1 or 2 shots were actually printed in the newspaper. The morgue was in regular use by newspaper staff members. There are inexplicable gaps in the collection, for instance, photographs from 1968 are missing.

Access

Access is through yearly binders created by Victoria Advocate newspaper staff. The binders are in a rough alphabetical order naming the subject of the photograph and the date the photograph was included in the newspaper. As the binders were in regular use by Advocate staff for over 30 years, the pages are fragile. Victoria Regional History Center staff are involved in a project to scan the binders to preserve them. As they are scanned, they will be available to browse on this site. The negatives are not available for browsing.

Retrieval and Reproduction

Special handling is required in the retrieval of these negative images. Victoria Regional History Staff can retrieve negatives you find of interest. Photographic prints can be ordered through the Center. Order forms, price, and other information will be provided on request. Several days will be necessary to process your order.

Permissions and Credits

The Victoria Advocate has given permission to the Victoria Regional History Center to print photographic prints for our customers' personal use. Permission to include Advocate photographs in printed publications should be secured from the Victoria Regional History Center. Attribution should be made to The Victoria Advocate and the Victoria Regional History Center.
